Devoted And Disgruntled: State Of The Arts On The Isle Of Wight

Quay Arts, 15 Sea Street, Newport Harbour, Isle of Wight, PO30 5BD

10AM - 6PM

Chris Slann Executive Director of the New Carnival Company and Robert Miles the Artistic Director of Quay Arts cordially invite you to come and say what you think about arts and culture on the Isle of Wight.

We want a conversation, a no holds barred, say what you will, frank and open discussion. And your voice needs to be part of it.

Jimmy Hendrix and Winston Churchill both got creative here. Darwin, Keats, Dickens and Lewis Carol did some writing, Karl Marx loved the Island, and at Osborne House, Queen Victoria was always amused!

But what about today? We have great heritage, a wealth of artisan craft makers and an inspiring and diverse natural landscape, but what about the arts in our cultural landscape? What about the artists? The theatre makers, visual artists, musicians, dancers, sculptors and the rest. Why make work here? What would make working here better?

What about the audience? What do you think of the art made here? Is there enough? Too much? Is it any good?

What are the reasons for cultural investment in the current economic climate? And if you want the arts, just go to London where the majority of that investment is being made anyway!

What about all those bloody tourists – should we tell them about our creativity, or leave them to enjoy making sandcastles on our lovely beaches?

Did we mention the ferries?

And one more thing – what about the young people??

These are some of our questions, we invite you to bring some more…the ones that are important to you.

Join us for an Open Space – the Devoted & Disgruntled event brought to the Island by the lovely people from Improbable.

The event lasts from 10am until 6pm and is free but places are limited. To secure your place we recommend you book a delicious Quay Arts lunch, which is available for £5 which also guarantees entry. We specialise in using local produce in our café, and vegetarians and vegans are not just ‘catered for’, they are welcomed.

This event is fully accessible.

To book please contact Quay Arts box office on 01983 822490 or email [email protected].

Come and get involved – we think you will like it!
