Creating and maintaining Community Theatre

wendy carter, 2 September 2012

Discussed with Chris Duff, Carla and Philip.

After discussion, I decided to take ‘maintaining’ out of the title. After all nothing is forever.

Exeter has had two large community theatres which for the length of their duration were sucessful. I thought it a shame that neither of them continued. There are a lot of people out there who not only enjoyed the experience of belonging to these groups but for some careers were created.

Where do we go from here? Carla is working with young people in parks using theatre forms to create events without using the term theatre which she feels migh intimidate the youths.

Chris is a member of Brown Paper Bag in Crediton which has been in existance for years. She feels that Exeter is too big for Community Theatre. Maybe she is right.

Philip talk about a number of community projects he has been involved in.

This discussion focused my thinking. Maybe small projects can be a way forward focussing on the many areas that involve theatre in various locations around the city. Maybe facilitating workshops for interested members of the community.
