DEVOTED & DISGRUNTLED - MUSICAL THEATRE: WORTH MAKING A SONG AND DANCE ABOUT?

An invitation from Caroline Routh of Musical Theatre Network:

Dear Friend

Since starting at Musical Theatre Network I’ve seen just how passionate people get about this art-form. Often positive, sometimes negative, the opinions and feelings that swirl around have been a fascinating introduction to a world that’s new to me and have raised more questions than there will ever be answers.

But these questions have often arisen in small groups, or one-to-one; now I’d love those conversations to get bigger: to engage with those already making musical theatre as well as those who have never tried it; to unpick what we make and how we make it; to look where musical theatre has come from and where it could go.

Those of you who were at our first conference last year will remember how eloquently Phelim McDermott spoke about his experiences not only within musical theatre but within theatre more widely. It’s fantastic therefore that Phelim has agreed to facilitate a one day Open Space event for us to talk all things musical theatre.

Open Space may be new to you but it’s a technique that’s been used successfully all over the world. It is an exciting open-ended event that enables a self-organising group (that’s us) to use its collective imagination to deal with complex issues and it will achieve this in a short space of time. By the end of the event the following will have occurred:

- All issues of concern to anybody will have been raised, as people take responsibility for doing that.

- All issues will have received full exploration or a plan made to continue if they haven’t.

- And YOU will take part in making it happen.

On past experience of Open Space events, the more diverse the group, the more creative and exciting the work has been. So anyone passionate about musical theatre and prepared to take responsibility for making it the best it can be should come along.

Please distribute the information to practitioners, colleagues, and anyone else who you think might be interested.
