REPORT DETAIL

Present were: Neil - Lost In Space; Judith - Hydrocracker; Lisa - Brighton Laboratory; Anne - freelance Dramaturg and at various points both Lee and Phelim from Improbable.

There were many questions - but few answers - everyone's experience seemed so different - ‘how long is a piece of string’ might be another way of approaching the question.

You keep going because you have to or you don't.

Points that came up were:
be practical, revisit your initial idea or concept for your company (don't get stuck in a rut), identify your market, you're a business, how do you exploit your experience, find ways to ‘fill your own cup’, see and engage with the wider world of theatre (and beyond), keep your intellectual curiosity, don't work in a vacuum, take stock, do your homework, identify your USP, you're making theatre- so what? network (a lot). Find like-minded partners.

After the initial impetus of a company's first show, the difficulties of building upon that work and enthusiasm are challenging once the ‘honeymoon period is over.

3 thought-provoking points came from the good folk at Improbable: the ’2nd album' is a station on the journey not the end of the line, Work out your own criteria for success, and finally learn how to identify ‘the dip’ and know if and when you should push through it or move on…
