D&D Roadshow 2013 - BRIGHTON
Brighton Open Air Theatre (B.O.A.T.) - launching the BOAT
Claire Raftery - 9 September 2013
REPORT DETAILThis session was to update the arts community on plans to build an open air theatre for Brighton, and gain advice and support for the project.
BOAT was the dream of theatre maker and construction manager Adrian Bunting, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier in 2013. He dedicated the last few weeks of his life to designing and launching BOAT, a bespoke ampitheatre to be built as a legacy for the city.
BOAT is planned for construction in Dyke Road Park bowling green, and is presently in planning with the council. It's main team are a group of 5 trustees, running as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation and working voluntarily to fundraise and build the theatre.
Discussions surrounded the effectiveness of the theatre design - a thrust stage with acoustic wall, allowing intimacy between audience and performers, but keeping in mind the acoustic needs of an outdoor space. Suggestions of venue links, different events & the potential of the Brighton Festival and Fringe programming the space in May.
Adrian wanted the venue to run part of the year by a lottery system, and lottery systems used by Canadian Festivals were suggested as useful research models.
The potential for theatre groups to use the space as part of a small touring network was discussed, building links with other outdoor spaces. Also, the means of marketing and building audiences for the theatre, and growing this audience for future productions.
There will be a open public consultation meeting for BOAT on Thursday September 26th 4pm-8pm at Dyke Road Park Cafe- everyone is invited to come down and find out more about plans for the theatre.
