Devoted & Disgruntled: How Do We Make Great Outdoor Arts?

101 Outdoor Arts Creation Space, Communication Way, Greenham Business Park, Newbury, RG19 6HN

11am-5pm

An invitation from Simon Chatterton - Head of Outdoor Arts, Corn Exchange Newbury

On the day we launch 101, our new outdoor arts creation space, I would like to start a conversation.  I want to be part of an open discussion about how we make work outdoors. I want to share our experiences, perspectives and aspirations.

I don’t see this as another discussion about funding and why there is never enough (but then maybe you do?). Indeed if our ambition didn’t always exceed our resources I feel we would be guilty of a woeful lack of vision. Instead, I hope that we can begin a dialogue about how we best create the work we love - outdoor arts, street arts, art in public space…whatever term you prefer.

I hope this event will be a step towards a shared understanding of how our particular magic can be made; in streets, parks, city squares and other outdoor spaces across the country. A discussion with art and artists at the heart of it and to which anyone who is passionate about outdoor arts is welcomed.

What are the ingredients for creating great outdoor arts?

How do we tell stories in the outdoors?

What do we need to learn to make our work stronger?

What processes, tools and techniques do we use to make our work?

How can we try out our performances and learn from our mistakes?

How can we encourage critical debate and feedback?

What can we learn from the venue-based world?

In a sector of amazing diversity what do we have in common?

If you have ever pondered these questions or others, then we invite you to 101, a creative space where together we hope that we might start, together, to explore some possible answers…

If you would like to stay for the launch of 101 in the evening of the 23rd Oct at 7pm then please email [email protected] before 10 October to register your interest. There is limited capacity and places are available on a first come first served basis.

This conversation will be held using Open Space, which is an exciting open-ended set-up that enables a self-organising group to use its collective imagination to deal with complex issues, all in an incredibly short space of time. By the end of the event the following will have occurred:
Every issue of concern to anybody will have been raised, if they took responsibility for doing that.

All issues will have received full discussion, to the extent desired.

A full report of issues and discussions will be in the hands of all participants.

And YOU will have taken part in making it happen.

Booking for this event has now closed.
