Is amateur theatre the new rep!

Paul Vincent, 2 September 2012

It became apparent that he word “amateur” is a bit of a problem, some felt that it had ‘snobbery’ connotations but these were mostly felt by those involved in the local companies. It was suggested that there should be no difference 'twixt professional and amateur, just theatre, or performance art.

One major suggestion was that the publicity must reflect the quality of the production. Make it good.
For a number of local companies a huge advantage seemed to be that companies can put on shows without vast financial resourses because the community had collective talents for all the disciplines, carpenters, electricians, painters and so on.

So, the answer to the question is yes and no in equal quantites.
