Do we need Stars?

Barnaby Callaby, 4 October 2012

While the feature of a Star in a production can provide ‘added value’ to a production and improve the media coverage of the event there are several reasons against the use of Stars:

There is a perceived lesser requirement of stars of television or music fame to perform to a certain standard.

They can make it more difficult for stage actors to attain serious roles.

It can be seen as a novelty or irrelevant.

Overall Stars attract a wide and diverse audience and when thoughtfully cast add a dimension of enjoyment for the audience which should not detract from the piece's artistic mission.
